Midleton College’s U13 team played their first match of the 2007 season on a very damp May evening which was brightened by their comfortable victory against a younger and less-experienced West Cork eleven.
Batting first, 5 of the Midleton team retired undefeated with skipper Ned Hodson top-scoring with 23 not out (which included 5 cracking shots for four), three players made 19 runs each – Alex Simonin, John Sweetnam and Thomas Turkington – and there was good support from Rory Hurley who scored 11.
Hurley clinched the man-of-the-match award by taking 4 for 15 in 4 overs, a very fine performance from a young player who has only recently started to play the cricket. John Sweetnam with 2 for 11 off 3overs, Thomas Turkington with 0 for 18 off 4 overs and Andrew Lenehan who conceded just 6 runs off his two overs provided excellent support.
LEAGUE ROUND 1 - 5th & 6th May
DIV 2
Midleton 1 .v. Clonmel 1 played at Midleton on Sunday May 6th 2007
Midleton won by 9 wickets
DIV 3
Midleton 2 .v. Clonmel 2 played at Midleton on Saturday May 5th 2007
Midleton 2 (111 for 1 wicket off 23.5 overs) beat Clonmel (109 all out in 29 overs) by 9 wickets.
Midleton’s comprehensive victory was a real team effort and particularly noteworthy were the contributions from youth players Simon Casey, Greg Harrigan, Ned Hodson, Josh O’Sullivan-Hourihan, Alex Tibshraeny and Thomas Turkington.
Clonmel, batting first, lost early wickets thanks to veteran Ken Higgs tight bowling backed up by excellent catches from Hodson and 12 years old debutant Turkington.
Midleton’s first change bowlers, Tom Campbell-Dick and Alex Tibshraeny maintained the pressure with Tibshraeny returning his best bowling figures for the club to date with 3 wickets for 16 runs.
Only the visitors’ Barry Cunningham could break the shackles of the Midleton bowlers with youngsters Harrigan and Turkington also returning excellent figures of 1 for 14 (wicket-keeper O’Sullivan-Hourihan taking a smart catch) and 0 for 5 respectively as Clonmel struggled to a total of 109 all out.
Midleton openers Simon Casey and Ken Higgs found the Clonmel opening bowlers difficult to get away but gradually started to take control and put on a 2nd XI record partnership of 100 runs for the first wicket.
Casey fell for a well-made 25 with Midleton just 10 runs short of victory but Higgs completed his half-century before retiring and then Hodson and Campbell-Dick saw Midleton home with 16 overs to spare.
