Midleton got off to a winning start to their Cork T20 Cup campaign tonight, with a narrow victory over visitors Cork County Lions in glorious sunshine.

With the first cut of silage removed from the Cricket Field, it was a case of singles or boundaries in a tough outfield, and some fine batting by the Lions was only rewarded with singles. The visitor’s cause was also not helped by a range of useful bowlers, with Atif (0-10 off four overs), Magsi (0-5 off two overs), Majid Shariff (1-2 off two overs), Luke O’Reilly (2-13), Kieran O’Reilly (0-7) and new boy Muhammad Maqbool (1-5) all working to devastating effect. But it was to be another new signing, Sajad Hameed, recently arrived from Norway, who was to steal the show, with a fine display of spin to claim an incredible 5-7 in only four overs. James Cresswell top scored for the visitors with an impressive 21.

Midleton’s response got off to a fine start, with openers Boom Boom Atif Akbar and Darragh O’Shea finding early boundaries, but some sharp bowling, particularly from Saline soon had the hosts rocking. Kieran O’Reilly though, fresh from his impressive score of 30 in the afternoon’s Cork Schools T20 final, was on hand to steady the ship, and eventually able to nurse his side home to victory with a huge four to wrap up proceedings in the 12th over.
